Local knowledge
South Bay water arrives mineral-heavy, and a tankless heat exchanger is the first place that shows up. Scale narrows the passages that hot water moves through, so the unit works harder for less flow and the temperature starts wandering during long showers. Anti-scale treatment at installation plus a maintenance rhythm is the difference between a heater that ages gracefully in this water and one that gets cranky in year four.
Most San Jose houses put the heater in the garage or against an exterior wall, which is good news for a tankless conversion: the venting run is short, the condensate has somewhere sensible to drain, and the unit comes off the floor to free up square footage. Older Willow Glen and Rose Garden homes sometimes need the gas branch upsized to feed a modern burner, and a garage install still gets California seismic bracing context handled correctly.
